If you have any interest in editing Wikipedia by smartphone, I encourage you to read my essay, Smartphone editing. Thank you.

Welcome to my talk page I use the name Cullen328 on Wikipedia, but you can call me "Jim" because that's my real first name. If you want to start a new conversation, please click "New section" at the top of this page. I keep the old comments from July and August of 2009 that follow the "Contents" here, because these friendly words of greeting made me feel welcome when I first started editing Wikipedia.

The importance of a friendly greeting

Please offer your thoughts

I would appreciate comments and suggestions on any contributions I make. I am learning.Cullen328 (talk) 03:22, 3 July 2009 (UTC)Reply

Nice work on Jules Eichorn. He's been needing an article for a while.   Will Beback  talk  06:28, 31 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
If I may suggest, now that you've posted the Eichorn article the draft below might be deleted. It's your talk page to do with as you like, but it's a bit hard to edit around.
As for formatting and pictures, a good way to learn is to look around at other articles to see what you think looks best. It can be helpful to break up long blocks of text into subsections. Perhaps it'd be possible to split the biography into two or three eras. Other than that, the formatting is usually kept fairly plain. As for photos, it's easy to upload them: the trick is in finding photos with appropriate licensing. If you have any personal photos then those'd be fine. There are might be pictures of the peaks he did first ascents on in the Wikicommons. File:Cathedral Peak.png is a so-so pic of Eichorn Pinnacle.
As before, feel free to ask if you have any questions. There are several editors here who are mountaineers or just admirers of the Sierra, so you're in good company.   Will Beback  talk  21:13, 31 July 2009 (UTC)Reply
PS: Many editors create "sandbox" pages for drafting articles. For example, User talk:Cullen328/Sandbox.   Will Beback  talk  00:17, 1 August 2009

Your climber biographies

Hey Jim, just wanted to say welcome and thanks for your contributions to the Sierra Nevada climbing history articles. You're filling a niche that's been missing here, I look forward to working with you. --Justin (talk) 11:54, 27 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

I'll second that. Nice work on Allen Steck and welcome to Wikipedia. I don't know who you are planning to write up next but if your taking requests I think Peter Croft (climber) could really use a page. If you ever have any questions please ask. Thanks again for your great additions.--OMCV (talk) 02:25, 29 August 2009 (UTC)Reply
Thanks Justin and OMCV. I am beginning work on Tom Frost and Glen Dawson. Comments on Norman Clyde would be welcomed. I will defintely read up on Peter Croft, OMCV. I am still "learning the ropes" in Wikipedia, to use a climbing analogy, and have all sorts of things in mind. My biggest challenge right now is getting permission to use images. My next biggest challenge is hiking to the top of Mt. Whitney with my wife in ten days - she's never been above 12,000 feet except for the train ride up Pikes Peak. As she's 56 and developing arthritis in her toes, it will be an accomplishment if she (and I) complete the Class 1 feat. Jim Heaphy (talk) 02:34, 29 August 2009 (UTC)Reply

Adding cover images

Hi Jim,

Thanks for your response. I fully agree with your rationale - but how do I "just do it"? I've gone to one of the image pages and tried to update the summary and licensing info (adapted from another album page from the same band), and was greeted with a rapid deletion message. Please join us in San Francisco!

Panel discussion at a recent Wikipedia & Journalism event.

The last Wednesday evening of every month, wiki enthusiasts in the San Francisco Bay Area will gather to collaborate, mingle, and learn about new projects and ideas. We have two brief presentations lined up for our kickoff event in downtown San Francisco:

  • The Nueva Upper School recently hosted the first ever high school Wikipedia edit-a-thon. We will hear what interests them about Wikipedia, what they have learned so far, and what they hope to achieve.
  • Photojournalist Kris Schreier Lyseggen, author of The Women of San Quentin: The Soul Murder of Transgender Women in Male Prisons, will tell us about her work and how she researched the topic.

We allow time for informal conversation and working on articles. Newcomers and experienced wiki users are encouraged to attend. We will have beverages and light snacks.

Please note: You must register here, and bring a photo ID that matches your registration name. The building policy is strict on this point.

Interview invitation from a Wikipedia researcher in University of Minnesota

Hello Cullen328,

I am Bowen Yu, a Ph.D. student from GroupLens Research at the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities. Currently, we are undertaking a study about turnover (editors leaving and joining) in WikiProjects within Wikipedia. We are trying to understand the effects of member turnovers in the WikiProject group, in terms of the group performance and member interaction, with a purpose of learning how to build successful online communities in future. More details about our project can be found on this meta-wiki page.

I notice you are active in activities related to project page and project talk page, so I wonder if I could invite you for an interview if you are interested in our study and willing to share your experience with us. The interview will be about 30 - 45 minutes via phone, Skype or Google Hangout. You will receive a $10 gift card as compensation afterwards.

Please reach me at bowen@cs.umn.edu if you are interested or have any questions.

Thank you,

Bowen

Notability review

I've created a page in my sandbox. I feel it is impartial and balanced. I have talked about the pros/cons of publishing this. I have not added logo or images, as I wasn't sure it would be accepted. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Contributor1972/sandbox Just a review for now if you please. Contributor1972 (talk) 01:35, 19 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Contributor1972. Start by reading Wikipedia:Notability (organizations and companies). My first reaction is not positive. A Wikipedia article should summarize what reliable, independent sources say about the topic. How is a reader supposed to verify that the claims in your draft are true? In its current form, your draft is unreferenced although you include URLs to three local newspaper articles. These articles show every sign of being the result of company promotional efforts and are the sort of routine coverage of local businesses that newspapers everywhere publish. Certainly, small businesses can be notable and I have written a few such articles myself. But I think that you will need to produce evidence of significant coverage in several reliable sources, especially those of national or at least regional circulation. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 02:12, 19 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Thank you for the review. I was hoping the local liberal paper of the CNHI group would be enough. Alas, even though they were not paid directly some information was provided, but editorially we had no say in the direction it went with the information. Similar to discussions about what could happen to Wiki a bio over time. I will attempt to find more coverage, but national or regional coverage without having a press release will be even more difficult.

I'll work on citation placement and finding more sources. Does each fact require a citation? I see so many articles that do not have citations, or if there is one - it is corporate in nature. Most would be considered spam by other people. Is there anything I need to do with the sandbox, to keep it from being used?Contributor1972 (talk) 02:39, 19 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Contributor1972, yes, we have well over five million English language articles and many of them have shortcomings. Experienced editors work every day to either improve or delete these substandard articles. Spam content should be deleted on sight. Policy does not require a reference for every fact, but our best practice is to provide at least one reference per paragraph which backs the content of that paragraph. Every direct quote requires a reference, and any controversial assertion requires a reference. As for your own sandbox, no one will mess with a legitimate draft article under development, unless its content violates our core policies. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 02:51, 19 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Added a few new sources with varied origins. I think it is at 12 sources now. Please review Corporate Bio Talk page about Notability. Contributor1972 Discuss with me 21:29, 25 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

You're 65?

Potential meeting place

Good man. Do you think there would be merit in creating a "senior Wikipedians" project or caucus or whatever? Given the age range here, I think anyone over 40 might qualify. OK, maybe 55, the AARP age. Coretheapple (talk) 14:01, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Well, strictly speaking, Coretheapple. I will not be 65 for a few more days. I run across a lot of "older" editors, and have the hunch that highly active editors as a group are older than what cliches lead us to believe. I am not sure if there are benefits to starting such a group, but am not opposed to the idea either. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 15:20, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Of course, emotional maturity is another matter. Buster7, who may be known to you, has self-disclosed not being a callow youth as well. Coretheapple (talk) 15:25, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
I'm tempted to give Grouchos' reply to the Friars Club...[Variant:] "Please accept my resignation. I don’t care to belong to any club that will have me as a member". But...as long as there are no monthly dues I might be persuaded to join other "silverbacks". Buster Seven Talk 21:43, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
I think the discounts alone make old age worthwhile. That and the alternative. Coretheapple (talk) 21:56, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Egad, can we get discounts on Depends? I'm an oldie but goodie myself. John from Idegon (talk) 22:15, 22 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
My biggest problem is my rocking chair which forces me to only be able to edit as it rocks forward. But....the one advantage is that I have time to think about what I am typing on the back swing. I guess every cloud has a silver lining. Buster Seven Talk 23:02, 24 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
That is a charming mental image, Buster7, and I hope that you do not rock on the tails of any dogs or cats as you edit. So, please either correct a typo or add encyclopedic content with every rock forward. Do you also edit while you sit on the front porch, playing checkers? Is the Readers Digest a reliable source? Is Lawrence Welk ready for Featured article review? Cullen328 Let's discuss it 00:44, 25 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
I think such an informal grouping could be useful in exchanging discounts and also in dealing with the elephant in the room, which is memory lapses. For instance, I frequently say to myself "why did I start editing Wikipedia?" I can't recall. Or perhaps that is more of an existential question. Coretheapple (talk) 13:47, 27 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Climber Biography Article

Hi Cullen. Thank you for your comments on my article. I really want to understand what does it means independent sources needed for the article. Really appreciate your guidelines. Thanks. Anis2520 (talk) 06:47, 31 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Anis2520. An independent source is a source which has no direct connection with the topic of the article. A person's own website is not an independent source for a Wikipedia article about that person. Neither is a website of an organization they are affiliated with. Nor a publication that they are a staff writer for. As far as mountaineers, there are widely recognized climbing journals that are highly reliable independent sources. Major newspapers and magazines are usually independent sources, except when writing about their own staffers and executives. Please read and study WP:INDEPENDENT. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 07:04, 31 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Odd question, but humor me

Greetings User:Cullen328. I see that you're an eminent Wikipedian. Do you think that good will and idealism are keys to Wikipedian and human progress? Tapered (talk) 07:29, 31 March 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello Tapered. Certainly, good will and idealism are exemplary virtues which are useful to Wikipedia editors and in all other worthwhile areas of human endeavor. But they are not enough in themselves for the successful building of an encyclopedia. We have policies and guidelines which were created in the spirit of good will and idealism in order to allow us to achieve the goal of a useful free encyclopedia which is constantly being expanded. So, keep your idealism intact while studying and internalizing our policies and guidelines. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 07:39, 31 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
I understand the guidelines. Wikipedia is based, to some degree, on idealism and good will. It's not enough. Wikipedia is useful, but it's not for me to edit much any more. Teddy Wilson, when asked by Marian McPartland for an opinion about Benny Goodman, said something to the effect of 'Benny didn't know what he wanted, he only knew what he didn't want.' Sometimes knowing what one doesn't want is a leg up. Many Regards Tapered (talk) 08:08, 31 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
What I forgot to say: thanks for the excellent advice. Tapered (talk) 08:10, 31 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
Editing Wikipedia successfully requires a certain very specific type of personality, Tapered, at least in my opinion. I am not sure that I can accurately describe that personality even while considering it essential. In a very real sense, editing Wikipedia is a hobby, and hobbies should be enjoyable. No one should feel obligated to go ice fishing if they do not enjoy sitting in a shack on a frozen lake, huddling over a hole chopped in the ice. I happen to enjoy editing Wikipedia because of my specific personality quirks. If you do not enjoy it, then I hope that you can find another hobby that will bring you great satisfaction. Take care. Administrators' newsletter – April 2017

News and updates for administrators from the past month (March 2017).

  Administrator changes

  TheDJ
  XnualaCJOldelpasoBerean HunterJimbo WalesAndrew cKaranacsModemacScott

  Guideline and policy news

  • Following a discussion on the backlog of unpatrolled files, consensus was found to create a new user right for autopatrolling file uploads. Implementation progress can be tracked on Phabricator.
  • The BLPPROD grandfather clause, which stated that unreferenced biographies of living persons were only eligible for proposed deletion if they were created after March 18, 2010, has been removed following an RfC.
  • An RfC has closed with consensus to allow proposed deletion of files. The implementation process is ongoing.
  • After an unsuccessful proposal to automatically grant IP block exemption, consensus was found to relax the criteria for granting the user right from needing it to wanting it.

  Technical news

  • After a recent RfC, moved pages will soon be featured in a queue similar to Special:NewPagesFeed and require patrolling. Moves by administrators, page movers, and autopatrolled editors will be automatically marked as patrolled.
  • Cookie blocks have been deployed. This extends the current autoblock system by setting a cookie for each block, which will then autoblock the user if they switch accounts, even under a new IP.

Captain Hollywood Project Photo

Hi Cullen328

thanks for your message. okay. so basically if i had tony email wikipedia commons could the photograph remain?

basically i plan on using it as a profile picture like this

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Maxxmusicfan/sandbox

but you're saying tony has to make his work a 'free' work?

how does that work exactly? Maxxmusicfan (talk) 01:19, 5 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello Maxxmusicfan. Please read Creative Commons license and be aware that the versions acceptable on Wikimedia Commons allow any reuse for both commercial and non-commercial uses. Only the copyright holder can license the image. By far the easiest way is for the copyright holder Tony to upload the image to Wikimedia Commons himself, licensing it as he goes. If he tries to do it by email, the wording of his email must be legally precise and unambiguous. There will be a delay until his email can be reviewed for accuracy. The current version of the image should be deleted since it is licensed by someone (you) who does not have the authority to license it. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 01:29, 5 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

hi Cullen328 i'm a newbie! how do i delete images from wikipedia commons? Maxxmusicfan (talk) 01:40, 5 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
Ask at the help desk there. Commons is a separate project and I have never deleted an image there, though I have added a lot of my own photos. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 01:44, 5 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
last question. once tony successfully gets it uploaded to wikimedia commons with the proper permissions. i would like to use it as the profile picture in the infobox for this article. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Hollywood_Project i'm currently working on revisions for this article too and it's very important for me to get that image as the profile https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Maxxmusicfan/sandboxMaxxmusicfan (talk) 01:48, 5 April 2017 (UTC)Reply
(talk page watcher)Hi Maxxmusicfan. Please see the response I left to your question about this at c:User talk:Marchjuly#Deleting a Photo. Also, it really doesn't matter that using this particular image file is important to you; what matters the most is using the file in accordance with relevant Wikipedia policies and guidelines, and according to consensus. The photo currently used in the infobox of Captain Hollywood Project seems fine to me. So, you may be better off seeing if there's a consensus to make such a change by discussing it on the article's talk page first per WP:CAUTIOUS. -- Marchjuly (talk) 02:47, 5 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Maxxmusicfan, I agree with Marchjuly here. What is "very important" to you is of no interest to experienced editors. We care only about the best interests of the encyclopedia here, not about what one editor or the subject of an article wants. As a matter of fact, when an editor who focuses on a single topic says that something is important, our usual response is "prove to your fellow editors that it is important to the encyclopedia". Cullen328 Let's discuss it 05:58, 5 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

My question on photos

Hello Cullen328,

Okay, so the article I have in mind is Uncharted (album). After I had written the article, I was trying to get the album cover on. I decided to let it drop for the time being, and submitted the article for creation. It was accepted, so I turned my mind to putting the album cover on again, but, a few days later, someone else did it for me. I was very happy, but I'm still wondering how to get an album cover on, specifically.

Pianoguysfan (talk) 12:12, 9 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Pianoguysfan. Please read our policy on use of non-free images, specifically item #1. Cover art for albums, movies, books and so on can be added only to a mainspace article that gives critical commentary to such a topic. The image must be uploaded here on Wikipedia, rather than at Wikimedia Commons. You must upload a low resolution version. You cannot use such an image in a draft article or in a sandbox or anywhere else. Just in a mainspace encyclopedia article. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 17:08, 9 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

(talk page watcher) Hi Carrite. It looks like there was an unneeded line break added between two words of the pdf's title. Just for future reference, the citation style your using is perfectly fine, but a citation template probably would have self-corrected this error or at least stated exactly what was wrong and where the problem with the syntax was. -- Marchjuly (talk) 23:50, 13 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Project Help

Hello, I am currently a student at American University in Washington DC enrolled in a class called Wikipedia and Public Knowledge. Throughout the semester we have been learning how to edit Wikipedia, create articles, and add media to existing articles. I am currently working on my final project. The topic is how to create a more welcoming community on Wikipedia for new users. We are obviously aware of what the Tea House is working on and my project group and I were wondering if we could ask you a few questions? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mo5086a (talkcontribs) 03:39, 20 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Hello, Mo5086a. I would be happy to answer your questions about the Teahouse or anything else. Cullen328 Let's discuss it 03:43, 20 April 2017 (UTC)Reply

Thank you so much! Here are the questions that my group and I wrote: What is your role in the Tea House? How long have you been doing what you’re doing? What is currently being done to create a welcoming community for new members? How do you think that you can improve what is being done? How effective do you think the Tea House is in increasing user retention? Does the Tea House currently have any major projects that its working on? Do you think the current system of just answering users’ questions is enough to generate a higher retention rate? How many welcome messages does the Tea House send in a week? and how many of those users typically stay as editors?
